3 Lists I Make Daily

I have a theory; you’re either a list maker or you aren’t. A bit like loving or hating Marmite, we neither camps will ever fully understand each other. I’ll nail my colours to the mast right here and now by telling you I am a confirmed, fully paid up member of the list making camp – always have been, always will be.

Here are 3 lists I make daily and the reasons why I make them:

1. To do list
I’m not a naturally organised person, in fact I am woefully unorganised unless I have a list. Each night before I go to bed I jot down a to do list for the next day. Sometimes I write it out in a note book, other times on the back of an envelope or just in the notes app on my phone but I always do it. I write a fairly detailed list because I feel like I’ve achieved more if I can tick off

It just works for me much better, it feels like I’m continually experiencing small bursts of positive throughout my day as I tick something off my list.

2. Expenditure
I write down every single penny I spend during the day. £3 for train fare? Noted. 50p for chewing gum? Noted. £110 council tax? Noted. I write everything down because if I don’t I find myself frittering money away and I’ll be heading in the direction of the dreaded overdraft at the end of the month. I’m not a naturally thrifty person, I have to work incredibly hard not to run out and splurge £400 on shoes or to go into WHSmith to buy stamps and come out having spent £250 on books and sweets. Writing down everything I buy holds me accountable to myself.

3. Gratitude
Well here you go, time to raise your eyebrows. Each day I write down at least three things I’m grateful for. It doesn’t have to be a big thing because the small things matter too. Somedays coming up with 3 things to be grateful for doesn’t come as easily as others but that means I spend the day trying to find the good in the bad and it’s a practice that has calmed me, grounded me and allows me to be a nicer person. Some days there are way more than 3 things to be grateful for, those are usually awesome days.

Are you a list maker?
