How to survive sale shopping: a guide

The world is roughly divided into two different kinds of people: people who love to shop during sale and people who rather swim in a sea full of sharks then set one foot in a store during Black Friday.

Sale shopping does take some skill and practice, but can be definitely worth your while. Look out though for the crazy sales version of yourself: she will buy items that don’t fit and that are not even remotely close to your style, just because they are ‘so cheap’. Be aware: the bigger the discount, the crazier she gets.

This sale-shopping guide will walk you through all the lures and traps that come with the sale shopping-territory and help you recognize crazy-sales-you in a millisecond.

Make a list
Before you enter a sale, make a list of what you need. Does your closet always seem to be short on tops and T-shirts (yes, guilty as charged…)? Then don’t go home with a skirt or another pair of paints. Get what you are always short of, instead of stacking up with items you have plenty. Only when you’ve made a list of items you truly need, you are allowed into stores with sale. This way you limit the chance you end up with items you lohooove for those brief ten minutes when you stand in the store, but that are not essential for your wardrobe.

Buy timeless pieces
Ah, the fashion monster. It buys pieces that it saw in this fabulous runway show (or that are similar) that were so in this season. The thing with these items is that it will always remind you of that particular brand and that particular show – and people who work in fashion will often immediately recognize it too. It’s OK if it is really you and you’re head over heels in love with the peace, but otherwise it might be smart to put it back on the rack. Especially when you buy it in sale, which means the 15 minutes of fame for this particular piece of clothing are already over.

Trust your fingers
If you don’t know a lot about fabrics (guilty again) it is a good idea to trust your fingers. Does the fabric feel synthetic to you and are you afraid that it would burst into flames if you held a lighter even remotely close? Then maybe it’s not such a great buy. Try to really feel and stroke the fabric a couple of times and then imagine yourself wearing it, this probably gives you a conclusive answer weather or not you would like to put it on.

This should help to keep the crazy-sales-you in check. If you really want something, always stop and ask yourself the question: do I really want and need this? If the answer is yes, buy it. If it’s a no, try to put it back…

Do you buy your clothes in the sale? What’s the find you’re most proud of?
