Third Form Undercurrent Dress

Though I’m all but convinced that neither my ‘Northern Chinese’ physic, or dorkward personality are designed to pull off ‘sexy’, and though I plainly don’t have the boobage to fill a low cut dress, I still wanted to make some noise about this modern-elegance-embodied dress (‘Undercurrent Dress’) by Australian indie label Third Form.

Inspired by minimalist design, Third Form is about fit and form. Clean lines and flawless finishes are key concepts in the collection, as well as a functional methodology to fitting the female shape. Each style in their debut collection conveys a geometric outline, and the internal details are conceived through their functionality. The thick waist band which interweaves the bust of the Undercurrent Dress is the defining feature of this dress, but is also the consolidating mechanism of the design. It functions much like a kimono obi (or perhaps a modernist reinvention thereof). When fastened, the soft draped quality of the fabric gains structure and form. I have no idea how this dress manages to mould to my body shape so perfectly.

Founder of Third Form, Merryn Kelly is a blogger-designer who has designed for major Australian labels including Lee Jeans, Shakuhachi and Zimmerman. With Third Form, she has taken her industry experience and combined it with her high-minimalist aesthetics, which runs through all of her ventures, including the Third Form Zine and the Third Form Blog.
