Scenes from the Weekend

A few little snippets from our weekend

If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen that over the weekend I attempted to bake some rusks. To start at the beginning, a "rusk" is a common South African double-baked biscuit/cookie that is generally dunked into hot coffee or tea. My mother is a OLYMPIC rusk baker and she literally makes the best rusks you have ever tasted.

Husband has been trying to nudge me into this "rusk baking business" for a little while now and the conversations usually end up something like this:

Him: So when are you going to make us some rusks?
Me: Urgh. you know, we don't have a proper rusk pan to bake them in.
*husband buys rusk pan*
Him: Ok - bake them now!
Me: No, I forgot we actually need a mixing bowl too.
*Husband buys mixing bowl*
Me: Sorry, no... um. I think we actually need two mixing bowls.
*Husband buys another mixing bowl*
Him: Ok how about now?
Me: But this weekend is so SUNNY! We should rather just go to the park.
Him: Ok how about tomorrow, it's rainy!
Me: Oh DAMN, I was in the shop and I totally forgot to get ingredients! MY BAD.

Unrelated, husband of late has been even more exceptionally amazing to me and I have been a little bit overwhelmed with how lucky I am to have him in my life. So on Friday evening which we spent having tapas in Soho, I asked, "What can I DO to show you how grateful I am for you?!"

The reply:

"Bake some rusks"

So. This weekend - after several months of him trying to convince me to bake rusks, I finally got out the seven rusks tins and four hundred mixing bowls that he had bought and set about trying to bake some rusks. As you can tell from the picture above (and as you may have guessed from my usual cooking fiascos) - I ended up with the outsides of the rusks completely burnt and the inside still tasting like dough.

To be an extra awesome wife, I also attempted to make these healthy apple muffins - which ended in me grating half my thumb into the apple mixture (HASHTAGFLAVOUR). I'm a little disappointed in this recipe author because, to be quite honest, if "baking powder" is soooo freaken important, they should really put it in BOLD. On the bright side, we now know how rock-cakes are formed.

We had a super productive Saturday, a morning run, yoga-doing, bed shopping, rugby watching, rusk baking, dirty-burger eating, friend jamming, party having kinda day. Sunday we took a wander through Wimbledon Village (and I stopped at every shop window, snapping displays that scream #WIMBLEDON2014 - which starts today!) We then hopped off to the park for a little laze about in the semi-sunshine. I read my book, husband pretended to sleep.

We headed back home in the afternoon kitted out to make epic hot dogs and then had an unintentional Suits marathon on the couch - when I got tagged to #stopdropandyoga - check out my post here! (The out-takes of this video are hilarious. I should post them sometime!)

in other news - you can see me on Southbound Bride today!
