One of the funny things about design blogging is that over time, I’ve found people come to expect that I do or have very specific things in my life. For me, blogging has always been about sharing all sorts of great ideas for building a happy home, whether or not I have all of them in my own house. But I find people still seem surprised that I don’t have a gallery wall at home or a particular type of rug, like a Beni Ourain. Lately, however, I’ve found that people ask more and more about “what I collect,” rather than if I collect. Collections are one of those funny things for me that fall into a category of “I love them!” but also “I don’t have them at home.” I think it’s tied to my current desire to have fewer things, but there’s not a single part of me that doesn’t love seeing other people’s collections. My father-in-law, who also works in design, used to have prized collections of all sorts of things, from antique jeweled fruit to metal picnic boxes. There’s such a love and devotion that comes from people who collect, save and artfully display groups of similar objects, so I thought it would be fun to devote this month’s hashtag challenge to the art of collections.
Whether you collect plates for a grand plate wall or antique tea tins, we want to see YOUR cherished collections. The key to this challenge will be finding clever and artful ways to display them. So whether you’re arranging your stamps in a rainbow display like ByBirdie’s collection above, or photographing small shadowboxes of shells brought home from vacation, share your favorite collections on Instagram or Twitter using the hashtag #DSCollections.
