Cocktails at Mamounia

We figured no trip to Marrakech was complete without a martini at one of the city’s oldest, luxurious hotels (and Winston Churchill’s favourite) La Mamounia.

So we took ourselves off to the bar for a pre-dinner cocktail and wander around the pretty impressive grounds. Sadly, we didn’t get to have drinks on the terrace as the Mamounia staff were concerned about an impending ‘storm’ that never quite materialised, but the drinks were nonetheless delicious. Refined and undeniably elegant, it’s the ideal place to spend a glamorous hour sipping on cucumber martinis, gorging on olives and generally feeling much older, wiser and grander than you actually are. The garden’s mosaics and massive cacti were pretty amazing too….

On a sartorial note, it’s worth thinking about a few silk jackets or shirts to take with you to cover up bare shoulders when heading out for dinner. Yes it’s hot and sticky well into the night (avoid polyester like the plague), but it’s respectful to cover up a little outside of hotels and restaurants. No one wants to be that tourist do they… The pyjama shirt I picked up from the Kate Moss x Topshop really came into its own once unbuttoned and layered over, let’s be honest, pretty flimsy camisoles.
