7 Rules for Friendsgiving

Every year, the day after Thanksgiving, the Duprie family hosts a “Friendsgiving” celebration in Los Angeles.

My parents fly in from Texas & my brother and I invite all of our close friends who weren’t able to travel to their own family Thanksgiving. It’s become one of my favorite traditions and within our little group we have created a few house “rules” that I thought you’d find helpful if you are looking to throw you own party this year.

1. Layer Up: We often take the party from indoors to out {and back again} between cooking things up in the kitchen to throwing it down with football in the yard. So it is very important to wear comfortable layers that you can peel off and on depending on the group activity.

2. Bring Wine: We always ask that every one bring a bottle of their favorite to share. Because wine is our family’s favorite beverage, I always stock up with my favorite, Seven Daughters, to ensure that the party won’t run dry.

3. Playful Mind: Your guests should know to bring their “A-Game.” After we eat dinner, we always play games. Our favorite one is to have everyone write down on a piece of paper what they are most Thankful for and put it in a bowl. We pass it around and try to guess who wrote what. We also love Cards Against Humanity.

4. Tune it Up: The host should select their most music savvy friend and have them create a nice dinner playlist and party playlist for after. This will reduce stress on the hosts shoulders and allow your company to contribute in a nice way.

5. Bring It Done: If you are asked to bring a dish or desert, bring the item already pre-cooked. There’s nothing worse than too many cooks in the kitchen!

6. Create your own traditions: Since your guests will be away from their own families, it’s nice to create a few traditions so if they return the next year, they’ll feel right at home. We started a nice tradition a few years ago that we end the night by watching Christmas Vacation.

7. Don’t overdue it: Friendsgiving is all about letting your hair down and having a relaxing time. In fact, it might be fun to have a Pajama Party theme!
