An Indian Tikka and Sequins For A Cornish Seaside Summer Wedding
I love this time of year, because we receive all the beautiful Summer and beach weddings to feature – wonderful inspiration for any of your planning a similar wedding for next year and beyond. Nadiya and Joseph, who both work in the Film Industry, decided to tie the knot on Saturday 7th June this year at Porth-En-Alls House, Prussia Cove in Penzance, Cornwall.
“We wanted to create a wedding that captured Joe’s Cornish roots and my Indian heritage. I spent a long time looking at Pinterest, but we wanted something unique to us – so, no bunting allowed!”

“Because our venue was so beautiful with fantastic views we actually didn’t want to take away from that so we kept the style simple and tasteful, with homemade, handwritten signage and a simple floral arch.”
Nadiya wore a sequin gown with all the hallmark Jenny Packham style, which she purchased from Morgan Davies Bridal.
“I first saw the dress online a few days after Joe proposed to me, I went to several bridal shops and tried on traditional dress as well as a number of Indian Saris, but nothing felt right. Morgan Davies was the last shop I went to, they had been very busy so I had to wait a while for an appointment. When I tried on the dress I was with my Mum and Bridesmaids. Their reaction was all I needed to know the dress was the one for me!
My old school friend Laura of Tomfoolery sorted my headpiece for me - she knows me and my style well, so asked designer Joanne MacFadyen to design and make the headpiece, earrings and bracelet I wore on the day. They were a perfect match. The headpiece was inspired by the traditional Indian tikka, which brides often wear, but it would not have gone with my dress so I needed to create my own.”
In homage to Nadiya’s Indian heritage, the couple chose to entertain guests by hiring a sitar player.
As soon as we got there he started to walk miles ahead of me, I had to practically run to catch up with him. About an hour into our walk (it was 11am!) he said he wanted to have lunch! I thought it was a bit early, but he had already zoomed off before I could say I wasn’t hungry! He rushed off finding a lovely spot looking out to the sea, by the time I caught up with him he was on his knee with my Grandmothers engagement ring in his hand. We celebrated with Cornish saffron cake and a bottle of champagne! Suffice to say we didn’t finish the walk!”
“Joe is from Cornwall so there was no question about whether we married there or London where I am from. We looked at several venues and decided that we had to have a sea view. We visited Prussia Cove on a dark, wet, miserable day in February 2013 and fell in love with the walled garden. Even in bad weather the place looked spectacular!”
Nadiya’s ring was inherited from her Grandmother, and originally from India. Joseph’s ring was from T Jewellery in Crouch End.
“My Father gave me away – we walked down the aisle to a sitar piece called Jhinijohti, it is a traditional raga that is usually played at Hindu weddings.
My Bridesmaid Kate Holt did a wonderful reading called To Love is Not to Posses by James Kavanaugh. Kate picked several poems that she felt would be suitable and then we choose our favourite.”
That little tot!
We chose Bob Marley ‘Is This Love’ for our first dance. We listen to Bob Marley a lot at home and we did not want anything too cheesy.”
“It is hard to pinpoint one moment that is my favourite, the whole day was incredible, my face ached the next day from smiling and laughing all day. My feet were sore from all the dancing, people say it’s the happiest day of your life but until you have experienced it you always think that is a cliché but it truly was the happiest day of my life.”
Words of Wedded Wisdom…
“My words of wisdom for Brides getting ready for their big day is delegate, delegate, delegate! I didn’t until it all got too much. There is so much to do you have to let go of things and trust your family and friends to help get things organised. Also, do not worry about the weather, we were scheduled heavy rain and storms and had blue sky all day, but whatever the weather the day will be beautiful.
We had wanted to offer wedding favours but decided a free bar was better! On the day however, I didn’t drink that much I was so on top of the world I was literally drunk with happiness so didn’t need alcohol. The great thing about not drinking apart from not having a hangover is that I remember the whole night so clearly, I danced with almost everyone, talked to everyone and lots of laughs and remember it all!
There is nothing I would change, even loosing power for half an hour was rather funny as all our friends got together to sing in the absence of music!”
