Upcycled Vase DIY

Let’s start the week off with another easy DIY project! This cute new vase was born out of necessity, because ever since my husband started going to the gym in October, he ALSO started drinking protein with his breakfast and now we have these monster containers leftover when he’s done.

They’re recyclable in our neighborhood, but plastic can’t be recycled as many times as metal or glass–did you know that? I learned it in college–so I’m trying to figure out other uses for some of our larger containers. Seriously, look at how small my hand looks and I have big hands for a lady! (Big hands, but my feet are small. So that’s fun.)

Anyway, I decided to turn one of them into a vase. I like having fresh flowers in the house in the summer, so now seemed like a good time to experiment. I love how it turned out, and it was something I whipped up in only 15 minutes of active work time.

Here’s what you need:

>> plastic container
>> spray paint
>> wrapping paper
>> washi tape
>> rotary cutter or scissors
>> a straight edge
>> cutting mat (probably not necessary if you’re using scissors)

Spray the container first. I like Rustoleum Painter’s Touch 2x, but Krylon has also been good to me in the past. While that’s drying, cut a length of paper that will cover the circumference (look at me using a math term in everyday life!) of your soon-to-be vase. I didn’t measure this, just kind of eyeballed it.

This is wrapping paper I got in the dollar spot at Target a couple of years ago. It’s a small roll, but still taller than my container, so after I cut the length I sliced it down the middle horizontally to get the right width.

Once your paper is ready, wrap it around the middle of the container and tape it in place. You can always use clear tape if you want, but since I just went on that washi tape-buying spree I figured I’d better use some. The back of this faces the wall anyway, so it’s not like anybody is going to see it.

Once the tape is secure, you’re done! Boom! Adorable new vase.

What I like about this is how easy it will be to adjust as the seasons/holidays change; just stick some new paper on there. I’m so happy with how this turned out that I might make another version using the second empty container that’s hanging out in the cupboard. And actually, there’s about to be a third one so if anybody would like a vase, I know where you can get an awesome one…

Do you have a lot of the same empty containers around your house? What do you do with them? Have you DIY’d any vases lately? How fun is that wrapping paper?
