No Shopping Challenge

Let’s take a little trip down memory lane. Remember when I started my dressing like a Frenchwoman experiment and realized how easy it was to repeat the same look all the time and still look cute? Meaning my wardrobe was small and easy to mix-and-match?

WELL. I fell off the wagon a little bit. Not totally off where I’m rolling in the mud beneath the wheels, but I’m kind of flopping backwards in the danger zone. I got into my old habit of buying things that are a good deal even if I don’t really need them and they’re starting to pile up. I do like all of them, and I’ve been good about wearing most things, but still. Our teensy little closet is going to overflow unless I re-group, so that’s what I’m doing.

It’s not like I need anything else, so I decided it was time to become one the stuff I already own and issue myself a No Shopping Challenge: no buying any clothes, shoes, or accessories from October 1st until January 1st. If my math is correct that’s 92 days. (And now that I’ve actually done the math, know that it feels like an eternity.) Since a quarter of the year is nothing to sneeze at AND it includes the holidays, I decided to bang out some specific rules for myself:

1. I can buy clothes/shoes/jewelry as gifts for other people.

2. I’m allowed to receive those items for Christmas and my birthday, which is also in December.

3. I can refashion pieces I already own.

4. I’m still allowed to buy tights/panty hose because snags are a real and present danger.

Otherwise, I have to rock what I have. I’ve done shorter spending freezes in the past and always ended up discovering awesome “new” outfits, so I’m hoping that will happen again. If nothing else, I’ll discover what I’m not really wearing and it can go to GoodWill on January 2nd. Oh! And we’ll save some money. That’s what Hubsey is most excited about.
