No-Mess Glitter Pumpkins

GLITTER! There’s no such thing as too much. Ever since we chatted about no-carve pumpkin ideas a couple of weeks ago, I knew I was going to bust out some sparkles this year. There IS, however, the small issue of glitter jumping off of things and leaving a trail through the house like the craft version of Hansel and Gretel. (After that post I had a couple of friends tell me they’d rather carve a jack o’ lantern and deal with pumpkin slime than use glitter and get it all over the place.) My original plan was to get sparkly and then add a coat of Mod Podge on top to corral the mess. Or maybe I could get the glossy Mod Podge formula and mix the glitter into it. I had some options.

But then I actually got to JoAnn and saw something magical that would forever solve the stray sparkle problem. Two words: glitter glue.

Did you even know that was a thing?! I didn’t! Glitter paint I’ve heard of, and I’ve used it a few times, but even that can flake off depending on the kind. Ain’t nobody for time for that. Here’s what you need to round up for this project:

>> pumpkins (I bought a whole bag of them at Target)
>> craft paint
>> GLITTER GLUE (this isn’t sponsored, by the way, I’m just excited)
>> paint brushes

This project is pretty straightforward. First, blob some paint onto the pumpkins and brush it out.

You can paint the entire surface if you want but I was going for a creepy/death look, like the little guys are being swallowed by darkness, and stopped about halfway down with some uneven edges.

Yes, I did this project in the bay window. Best light in the whole house.

I let them dry for a few minutes, then busted out the glitter glue. It’s the same texture as regular ol’ craft glue–which meant it would be better for making lines and shapes instead of spreading around on a surface–so I added some in each ridge. The ridges themselves also acted like natural buffers and helped keep my hand steady since I did have to squeeze quite a bit.

After your hand workout is done, let the glue dry for a couple of hours. That’s it! You can go enjoy your pumpkins without worrying about bits of glitter ending up on your face.

Now that I’m looking at these again, they kind of have a spider-y vibe. Spiders just looooove to creep around our house, so maybe they’ll be drawn to these and will be easier for me to get rid of. Lately they’ve been enjoying the ceiling, which is inconvenient AND horrifying.
