DIY Snowflake Artwork

It’s Monday, which means more Handmade Holidays 2014! To see all of the posts from this year, head over here.

Ladies and gentlemen, the Christmas decorations are UP! I’ll have a full rundown for you on Wednesday, with lots of pictures, but first I want to tell you about the snowflake wall hanging I whipped up over the long weekend. It started out as something I was a little iffy about, but now we’re friends.

I found the naked snowflakes at JoAnn last week. I was lured into the area by some fake deer, but then I saw Mr. Snowflake and his friends hanging above them and I thought, “Huh!” The actual wooden snowflakes were great, but I wasn’t sold on the straw for Casa Ronchetti. (We’re not too rustic/country/nature-influenced around here.) I figured it would be easy to yank off of there, so I bought this without having a real plan and decided to wing it when I got home. It was on sale for $4.19, so if things did get weird then I was only out a few bucks.

I loved doing the turquoise/red theme for last year’s Christmas decor, so I decided to stick with it again. I rummaged around in my hoarder’s paradise office and found paint and embroidery thread to jazz things up. If you don’t have much in your stash, these are two of the most affordable supplies ever. Acrylic paint is usually around $1.50 a bottle and the thread is, like, 40 cents.

The first thing I did was ixnay the straw. It was attached with coated wire, so I just unwound all of the ends.

Ah, now I can breathe.

Then I busted out the craft paint and did two flakes in each color. I alternated based on snowflake size, but you can do it however you want. I haven’t done anything to the other sides yet, but I might make all of them gold.

The paint dried really quickly, so after about half an hour I was ready to assemble. To tie everything together I used the embroidery thread. I wasn’t very scientific here; I just eyeballed the distance and cut.

That’s it! Snowflake artwork status: complete.

We have a tiny wall that leads to our garage–it’s three feet long–so that was the obvious place to put it. I didn’t have anything in that spot last year, but I like how this winks at the red pom poms I added to the trolley print. SO FESTIVE! (I can’t wait to show you guys the rest.)

Did you make any decorations this year? Is your house full of festive cheer yet? I started pulling things out last week, but didn’t finish until yesterday. Be sure you pop back here on Wednesday to see the rest of the house! Red and turquoise foreverrrrrr. Do you use a non-traditional color scheme, too, or do you like green and red?
