Fabulous Room Friday 09.26.14

This week’s “Fabulous Room” is a sumptuous and glamorous dining room by Fenwick Bonnell of Powell & Bonnell in Toronto. The homeowner hired Bonnell upon returning from an eight year stint living in Paris. He missed the beauty of Parisian Hausmann buildings and sought to recreate something reminiscent of the distinctive look in Toronto. Details like herringbone wood floors and beautiful millwork with mercury glass insets help to create a romantic Parisian aura. The setting is dramatic, but the layout is relaxed enough for intimate entertaining. A tall, custom-made, tufted banquette in rich chocolate velvet is juxtaposed with an Eero Saarinen Oval Tulip Table and Bertoia Side Chairs– a wink to the twentieth century according to the designer as well as a good counterpoint to the dramatic banquette and overall setting. I know I am always going on and on about “the mix” and this room is a fantastic example of a great design mix. You have a beautiful, grand setting paired with furniture from various periods resulting in a cozy and chic atmosphere.
