Fashion in Film: Gia

Hello, La Dolce Vita readers! Jessica Amento here blogging to you from the heart of Los Angeles. Moving right along with my “Fashion In Film” series, I’m excited to draw attention to a particularly stirring piece of cinema this month: Gia. The biographical movie released in 1998 by Michael Cristofer chronicles the ill-fated life of supermodel Gia Marie Carangi, who came to fame in the late seventies with multiple Vogue covers and campaigns for Yves Saint Laurent, Christian Dior, and Versace, before passing away tragically from complications of AIDS. In addition to putting Angelina Jolie on the map — her breakout performance as Gia earned her a Golden Globe and SAG Award — the film gives us a wealth of wardrobe inspiration. Jolie’s outfits by costume designer Robert Turturice go a long way to convey Carangi’s rags-to-riches journey as a tomboy living in Philadelphia who blossoms into a glamorous cover girl.
