Red, White, and CUTE!

I’m not exactly sure why, but Independence Day is one of my favorite holidays. Maybe it’s the great childhood memories I have, spending time with family and watching fireworks from the school hill by my home in Ferguson, Missouri. Maybe it’s the fact that I married a Marine and on one hot July 4th I got to see him in his uniform for a parade…be still my heart. No matter how you slice it, I’m a sucker for red, white, and blue, and we get our wear out of those Old Navy flag shirts by sporting them all year long.

On a side note, since I last posted, we are celebrating freedom in our own special way…I became a business owner! The amazing ladies at Izzy & Ivy decided it was time to retire, so they sold the business to me and my husband. I’m the pattern end…he’s inventory and shipping. We’re super excited and looking forward to seeing where God takes us on this new adventure.

Anyway, back to the patriotic outfit! When I was in St. Louis for Spring Break earlier this year, I went to Jackman’s Fabrics and picked up some of this sweet Daysail fabric by Bonnie and Camille for Moda. I knew I wanted to make an Evie with it, but I stashed it away. Fast forward to now and I decided to go with a hack of the pattern. But don’t fret! I’ll spill the beans on my modifications. Because I lub you!

I love the original style of this Evie Sun Dress, but I’ve sewn a lot of them, so I like to mix it up every once in a while.

For starters, I took 3″ off the length of the bodice. The original Evie has a horizontal stripwork skirt, so I added up all of the strips (minus the seam allowances!) to get my length, and I kept the hemband. Because I’m lazy I think they look so smart! I also added 10″ of width to each of the skirt pieces. I did the two skirt pieces in different fabrics and placed the skirt off center from the side seams.

I also added this fun pom pom ric rac that I purchased from Little Red Cottage on Etsy. But if you click on the link, going down that rabbit hole of trim is ALL ON YOU.

Kidding.

(Not kidding.)

I see you. Drooling over that side tie sash. I borrowed the sash from our Tallulah pattern and tweaked it a little. And you’re in luck, because in a few weeks, I’ll have a full tutorial! I’ll also show you how to make the Tallulah sleeveless, so stay tuned for that.

In the meantime, we have a new pattern coming out really soon, I’m doing a Summer Blog Tour with some other fabulous designers, starting up the Izzy & Ivy website, and writing the next pattern to release! Until then, check out Miss Thang. She’s such a trip.

Wishing you a very happy Independence Day! Thank a Veteran! Eat some s’mores! Watch some fireworks! Happy Birthday, America!
