Make Learning Interactive Using QR Codes!

It's Thursday!! As promised, I'm here to share a completely unique way to use QR codes in the classroom (at least I think it's unique... I haven't seen anyone do this yet!).

QR codes can be used as a quick way for students to link to: a) a website or b) text displaying answers to teacher-created questions. Using QR codes in this way definitely has its benefits... but I wanted to come up with an idea where students could use technology to CREATE, COLLABORATE and use HIGHER ORDER THINKING skills. (Refer the top three branches on the poster to the right).

Recently, I was contemplating ways to do this with QR codes.

Here is the lesson idea I came up with:

1. Students CREATE a word problem.

2. They CREATE a QR code with answers to their word problems. My students really enjoyed creating their own QR codes...there's something about scanning these little black and white images that just takes engagement up a notch!

3. Students then swap their questions with each other! If another student disagrees with an answer linked to the QR code... BOTH students EVALUATE and ANALYZE the word problem and work TOGETHER until they agree on a correct answer.

This is my favorite part. At first, students might come to you and say stuff like, "Aman's QR code says 4 but it's not... it should be 7". Instead of telling them who is right, I get them to prove their answer to each other! Eventually, one person will see where they went wrong. This results in rich dialogue and both students strengthen their understanding of the word problem.

Instead of having students answer word problems from a text book, this just makes math a little more fun and interactive. Plus, by applying math vocabulary during the process of writing their own word problems, students reinforce their understanding of these important key words!
To help them come up with interesting word problems, I posted my math vocabulary posters! It helped them make a connection to real word situations that require us to add or subtract.
