Kill Your Darlings | Stop & Look

Whenever I am working on a project, whether it is for a client or for my job, I offer a multitude of options, once we have talked through the direction that we would like the project to take. From those options, we whittle down to the best of the best, and discard the rest. Sometimes, some of the ideas and options that get tossed out are my favorites… And that is OK. That is how the job goes. This… Is what we call… Killing our darlings.

This blog design here is one of the darlings that I had to pass on while designing a corporate blog, not too long ago. There were other options that were a better fit for the goals we had put into place. However, this little darling was hard to let go.

I will say that… I am excitedly going to be bringing her back to life in the form of a template when my new site design and shop go live this month… So I am really happy that she will get to shine on the interwebs… all in due time. What does due time mean you ask?

Well… The new site launch date has been officially set to October 20th. That is NEXT MONDAY my friends… HOW PUMPED ARE YOU? I am over the moon. I have been seriously working night and day on this thing… And having such a good time doing so. Just ask all of the friends that I haven’t seen for 2 months… They can attest to that. This new site launch means so much to me. It is a huge step in pulling together so many of the skills I have been honing over the past 3 years, and it is an exciting endeavor for me to really grow as a designer. I can’t wait to get to share in the excitement with you all!

How do you deal with laying down some of your best ideas for the good of your team?? And not just in the world of design, but maybe it is in the form of deciding on dinner plans, the best destination for your next road trip, your baby’s name, what house to choose? There are a million times when compromise leads me to kill a darling. And by darling I by no means mean Burley… Most of the time.
