Reading List:

  • The Trial by Franz Kafka. A classic. But everyone references The Metamorphosis and calls things “Kafkaesque” without actually, well, reading Kafka’s most important novel. I’ll be doing just that. (Link is to a free e-book version)
  • Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T.S. Eliot (illustrated by Edward Gorey). This is more for our little bean. I’ve already been reading her a few poems each night. The illustrations by Gorey give it that extra sensation of mischief afoot.
  • The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P by Adelle Waldman. I started with this book and it’s taking me a bit of concentration to get through it. However, nearly every reviewer and their momma is on the jacket of this book, so it has to be a good one. Right?
  • Oh The Glory of It All by Sean Wilsey. While easily (and wrongfully) dismissed as a tale of poor-little-rich-boy, this intensely narrated novel has been on my list for years. All the reviews talk about the deftly rendered prose of Wilsey, who is one of the founders of my beloved McSweeneys.
  • New York Times:Q&A with Elena Ferrante” by Rachel Donadio. The elusive Ferrante (a pseudonym) who has rocked the Italian- and English-speaking literary worlds. This interview says a lot– and yet, very little at all– about the writer.
  • The New Yorker: Collected Poems” by Valeria Luiselli. An ode to New York. Excited to read it.
  • The Archives of Reading My Tea Leaves. I am a fan of Erin Boyle and her “minimalist” philosophy. Going through her archives, I’m finding so many wonderful things, like this book and this cake and this photo series.
  • How to Become a Morning Person” by Lauren from Serving at Home. Because it’s a daily struggle.
Touching the Art” videos by Casey Jane Ellison. A video series on the art world. I was suspect that it is produced by the Ovation network, but I’m definitely going to give it a whirl before passing judgment.
