DIY Studded Plaid Shirt Tutorial

Last week I hinted at what I was planning to do with this thrifted flannel shirt, and I’m really pleased with how it turned out. It was inspired by this shirt, and I can’t wait to wear mine in a similar outfit. Mine isn’t an exact copy because I wanted to use studs I already had on hand, but I had limited amounts of the sizes I wanted to use. So I improvised, and even managed to find a couple of studs that perfectly fit over my pocket buttons. I think it was meant to be.

Materials:
Plaid shirt
Small studs (mine are 6 mm flat studs like these, but for ones more like the inspiration shirt I’d use these round dome studs
or these)
Needle-nose pliers
Ruler
Fabric pencil or chalk

Methods:
1. Lay out your studs on your pocket in a pattern you like.

2. Measure and mark your stud placement. I actually measured and then placed each stud without marking the fabric, but it’s up to you.

3. Stick the stud prongs through the fabric, then bend them down using the pliers.

4. Continue until you’ve placed all of your studs.

5. If you happen to have a stud that fits over your buttons, you can just bend the prongs around the button to hold the stud in place.

6. Repeat the above steps on the other pocket.

By the way, this is what happens when I try to take pictures of projects around here:

Happy studding!
