When Bad Videos Happen to Good Songs; You & I by One Direction

Its only via searching for this tag that I know its been eons since I last felt such shock (click here for an example) , and disappointment in a song being better than the video it spawned. Such shock that the poor quality of a video in fact makes it more memorable (or notorious) for overshadowing the song itself.

One Direction. I really really wouldn’t dream of saying a bad thing about them ordinarily. I’m always defending them. I’m a Directioner, I am. I may be quite… a bit older, but I love their poppy happy cutesy stylings. I really do. You have to admit Story of My Life was epic. The video, the song, everyone saying hey its a song that doesn’t SOUND like One Direction, so yay! Best Song Ever was that catchy song that sounded like Baba O’Reilly and had the guys in dorky costumes (Zayn making a good lookin’ girl?) and then… we had Midnight Memories. Maybe the memories that are made at midnight are the ones that remain foggy because really, that song didn’t have much traction.

You And I was a song that I had on repeat for ages when I first listened to Midnight Memories (album wise). Epic ballad. Where you wonder which One Direction member would be serenading you… ahem. Maybe just me?

And WHAT. DID, THEY. DO.

Did they run out of money? Did they stop caring?

They went to the Michael Jackson Black or White videoclip idea of people morphing into each other! Oooh! Harry morphs into Zayn! Oooh! That’s so clever! No. It was done in 1991. A few years before Harry Styles was born, might I add.

And they wear the same misshapen grey cable knit jumper!

Let’s not even talk about the hair. (Because I really could go for a paragraph for EACH of the guys on hair alone)

(Okay, but quickly Niall looks like he got the same hairstylist that Keith Urban saw earlier this year)

Guys. Did you even try?

See for yourself.

What do you think? Am I being too harsh? If this isn’t their worst; what is?
