Garlic Bagel Chips

For my very first on-site interview for (someone), I remember vividly being asked the question “which snack brand do you like the best?” I remember wanting to high-five myself because I thought I was a genius for saying Gardetto’s under the reasoning that this probably unpopular response would make me stand out because who says that? Honestly, you have no idea how much I actually love those garlicky rye chips and I wasn’t saying it for the sake of saying it.

I did not have (or need) a car when I lived in New York City so a Gardetto’s encounter was extremely rare because they are usually carried in gas stations. I did find it in a bodega out in Queens once and it was like…seeing a unicorn. Obviously, I had to buy as many bags as I could. Nowadays, I can buy it whenever I want because I have to drive everywhere here so they’re now as common as…um…they’re just common.

Even though they’re pretty accessible now, I’ve always wanted to make my own rye chips from “scratch”* out of curiosity. I’ve been too lazy to go on a hunt for rye bagels but my curiosity has overpowered me so I bought some day old bagels from the local grocery store to experiment with. The only ones available were wheat though so I ended up making fake Gardetto’s with wheat bagels. Now you know why this post is called garlic bagel chips and not DIY Gardetto’s.

I guess they’re Garfake-o’s.

It has the same level of garlicky deliciousness but once I get my hands on some rye bagels, I’ll be making them again to make sure they actually taste like Gardetto’s.

*Because I’m not gonna make bagels from scratch.

For 4 servings:

  • 4 bagels, thinly sliced (<1/4”)
  • 1 tbsp. olive oil
  • 1/2 tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tbsp. garlic powder
  • 1/2 tbsp. onion salt

Preheat oven to 375F. Spread bagel slices out on a large baking sheet. Drizzle or mist olive oil on bagel slices; Next, spray on Worcestershire sauce with a (preferably food safe) spray bottle. Sprinkle garlic powder and onion salt over. Give it a quick stir and set pan on the lowest oven rack. Bake for 5 to 7 minutes or until the chips are golden brown. Let it cool completely before serving — it won’t crisp up if you eat it warm, so hands off.

I feel like I should upload a Simon & Garfunkel music video because Garfake-o’s sounds like Garfunkel.
