Just before I left for the Philippines, the judges for the NatWest UK Fashion & Textile Awards met to discuss this year’s entries. After a day spent going through all the companies with the proverbial toothcomb we (Hilary Alexander, Laura Weir, Sunday Time Style; Alexandra Fullerton, Stylist; Peter Ackroyd MBE, Woolmark Company; Heather Melville, NatWest; Graeme Moran, Drapers, and myself) produced our shortlist for each category.
We were looking not only for excellence in design and creativity, but evidence of commercial performance and innovation that had allowed the entrants to grow over the past 12 months despite difficult economic conditions. (There is one award we don’t judge: the winner of the MyDaily UKFT Designer Collaboration Award is decided by a public vote via www.mydaily.co.uk (voting open until 31st March).)
