Designing my perfect pair of AirMax with Nike iD

This is what I did at 4am in a hotel room in Shanghai: design my perfect pair of trainers. I’ve been looking for a black and white pair of Air Max for weeks: they seem to sell out in my size (UK6/US 8.5) almost immediately, and I got fed up of fruitlessly stalking Netaporter (love these), Offspring, Sports Direct and Niketown.

So I decided to design and order my own.

The process is remarkably simple. I wanted AirMax because I LOVE the bounce. I tend to fly in trainers, because there is so much walking to be done in airports, and because, even if my feet swell long-haul, I can just loosen the laces on arrival.

My shoes had fourteen steps, and I could choose any colour I wished for each step. I have to say that my process was pretty simple, as I just wanted black, with a white swoosh and heel.

You can also choose to have initials embroidered on the heels. I did mine self-coloured. LLG, of course.

Once the shoe is designed, Nike are excellent at keeping you up to date with your order. Although they warn that they take up to six weeks, mine took a mere twelve days.

At a cost to me of £145 my pair of AirMax Nike iD were certainly more expensive than a High Street pair, which are around £90. (Nike ID shoes range in price from £80 for a pair of Nike Blazer Low iD to £180 for a pair of Nike Air Max 2014 iDs.)
