Rainy Day Fun

This afternoon we had a nice soaking rain, followed by a hard pounding rain.

It had misted and lightly rained off and on all morning, but we managed to get out and play anyhow. The girls all jetted outside the minute lunch was over, and started begging the clouds to rain.

Soon, we had this:

There is something about doing what is perceived as being "forbidden", such as racing around in the rain in your clothes. The event is far more joyful for its illicitness. :o)

Before too long, Beanie and Sally were done, but Sadie and Lil continued to stay out and have a blast.

I love the goofiness!

Eventually, the rain became too much for Sadie as well, but Lil stayed out to be free and enjoy the moment.

I settled the other girlies in with a movie and snack and left Lily alone. She's had an abundance of people time the past week or so, and my little introvert simply needed time to be by herself. Her extroverted mama couldn't imagine being outside alone playing in the rain could be any sort of fun (it's that alone part). I was on the phone with Robin chatting at that point and spoke those words aloud. Robin laughed at me and said something along the lines of the converse being, how could you NOT have fun out there all by yourself??

I don't get it, but I understand her need and cater to it when I can. :o)

What's not to love about running around in the pouring, pounding rain?

Sparklies:

1. I also taught the girls to Chinese Jump Rope today:

They had so much fun! I was astounded to learn they have no jump ropes at school--either individual or the giant one! Oh my goodness, my childhood school days were devoted to jumping! We'd all take turns turning and jumping in and out, and jumping together and trying to master double-dutch! I wonder if I could procure a long piece of rope and do that with the kids before the end of summer...

2.
Today's harvest. :o)

I didn't want all the little peppers to go to waste, so I chopped them up, spread them on a cookie sheet and I'm currently freezing them. Once they're frozen, I'll divvy them up into individual servings until we're ready to use them. :o)

3.
Ellie got out her blocks and got to work.

"Look, Mommy! I built Arendelle!"

4.
Snuggling during family movie night. Kory, I've got to go back to your list of movies. We're struggling a bit with material that will not only be Bean appropriate, but that will keep her attention.

5. Leftover BBQ for dinner. And cheesy dip and fries. We're all about wholesome and healthful tonight...can you tell?

No milestones.

As with most folks, I'm all sorts of sad and out of sorts following the death of Robin Williams. I believe President Obama characterized him best:

Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, a bangarang Peter Pan, and everything in between," President Barack Obama said in a statement. "But he was one of a kind. He arrived in our lives as an alien -- but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit. He made us laugh. He made us cry. He gave his immeasurable talent freely and generously to those who needed it most -- from our troops stationed abroad to the marginalized on our own streets.

The world lost an amazing talent. As I said to Brien this morning, there is an irony in the fact that a man who brought so much joy and laughter to so many has now left so many so filled with sadness. I felt much the same way I did when Hannah died--how on earth could somebody so vibrant and ALIVE be gone?

I understand he suffered from bipolar disorder and struggled with addiction and the truth is we never know somebody's story or what they're going through. Still...he has always been a part of my life. I'm hard pressed to choose my favorite role--for there are many I loved--but I think I was most deeply touched by John Keating. To me, he embodied what all educators should be--someone who challenged and inspired, someone who was passionate about the subject matter he taught.
