Parkway Adventures

Today we remember our veterans and thank them for their selflessness as they have served and protected our country.

Today I sincerely wished I were in London to see the poppies surrounding the Tower of London as the UK also remembers their veterans.

Today, I was happy to be home with my veteran and spend time exploring with him.

I had planned to go to CW for the morning, as is my Tuesday wont. But, as we were driving along, we realized the sky was icky and it wouldn't be that great a day for taking photos. Instead, we decided to take a ride and just enjoy the fall foliage we passed along the way.

I picked up Colonial Parkway and began to "oo" and "ah" as we passed stunning trees showing off their autumn splendor. I told B one of my favorite things about autumn is how all the trees don't change all at once, that they spread it out over the course of a couple of months, leaving more for us to enjoy.

As we passed a pull-off, I decided to pull in so we could explore the views.

I decided that even though the sky was leaden and gross, the trees were still beautiful and I just had to take a bunch of photos.

We hit the road, and before I knew it, I needed to pull over again.

Our next stop was Indian Creek and we got out and really explored. The tide was out so there were all sorts of fun things to see!

First off, B and I thought this sign was rather amusing. Why have a boat on a launch if you aren't supposed to launch there? Upon further exploration, we saw there was a very faded line across the image.

Here's an oyster.

Can you see the mussels?

A pretty view. Because it's a creek, the water wasn't still as it was at the lake.

A couple years ago, our family took a random road trip up through Matthew's County and followed a road to the end and found water and reeds and thousands upon thousands of snails clinging to reeds.

Well, we found gobs of them today and we were able to get a closer peek.

They were many different colors.

There were piles of them on the ground and we had to be careful where we stepped.

Look at the "foot" holding onto the reed. So cool!

And, here were mussels down in the roots of the reeds.

B found these--otter tracks!! How cool is that?!?

We drove on to Yorktown and the original plan had been to turn around and head for home. Instead, I headed for the Waterfront and we got out and explored some more. :o)

I'll share those photos tomorrow, and leave you with a couple of delightful foliage photos.

A shower of russet leaves.

It was odd and sad not having Bitty with us since she was in school, and at the same time, B and I were looking forward to going out alone next year since both girls will be in school.

We took time to stop and remember and thank our veterans and we had time together to discover new places to visit. It's been a lovely day.
