On set

I had fun taking these behind the scenes shots with my little disposable camera of Georgette Magazine’s latest cover editorial starring Alison Sutcliffe-Smit. It felt weird and exciting at the same time that I couldn’t look at any screen to check how the shot came out (like one can on a digital camera). The shoot was on location in St James and Kalk Bay in Cape Town – it’s so beautiful there, which makes it almost impossible to take a bad photograph (even with a disposable camera). The only negative thing about shooting on film is the cost of it all, and of course with digital photography today it’s so much more cost effective. This little Kodak disposable camera with 27 photographs cost about R135, then another R90 to get it developed and scanned onto a disk – Digital Eye charged R15 just for the blank DVD… Some of the shots were redundant as they were too dark. Anyway, I wanted to give it a go and I thought that the majority of the photographs came out OK, and despite the cost, I still really, really, really want a proper film camera. My grandfather is an artist – he paints and photography was one of his hobbies. He used to take amazing photographs of my grandmother, mom and uncle all the time. So much so that he even had his own dark room. I just love the grainy, old-school look and feel, the bright quality of the colours, and the general atmosphere captured in each shot.
