Lunar New Year Afternoon Tea at Yauatcha (STYLE SLICKER)

The other day on a cosy late afternoon, before the daylight dimmed to lifeless charcoal dusk, I invited my other sister Isabella of ‘Rockin’ That Gem‘ blog, to sample some little Chinese New Year treats at Yauatcha. I’ve eaten at Yauatcha quite a few occasions, lunch and dinner, business and pleasure, it is one of my favourite dim sum venues in London and has never let me down.

Quietly sipping warm jasmine tea and peach and guava smoothie, giving ourselves a few minutes to warm up our stomaches before gorging on handsome dim sum, and find a topic to start a conversation, blogging of course! We ordered the Yauatcha Signature Dim Sum Menu for 2 guests, the menu consists of;

Blue swimmer crab, with peanut and sesame dressing.
Venison puff.
Poached Peking chicken dumpling.
Har gau.
Pork and prawn shui mai.
Seafood dumpling soup.
Three style mushroom cheung fun.
Crispy aromatic duck, quarter.
Fried chilli squid, with oatmeal and curry leaf.
Chinese vegetable.

Our favourites were the Blue swimmer crab and Three style mushroom cheung fun, both hearty, interesting and fulfilling – substance over style, and perhaps a tiny touch of art in the flavour. I loved the beautiful glossy Chinese vegetable (so picture perfect), fresh, simple, crunchy, makes a perfect snack on its own.

We ended the afternoon tea with a winning dessert to celebrate the Year of the Horse, limited edition Red Macarons depicting the Chinese character for the Year of the Horse, filled with mandarin ganache and mandarin pate de fruit for prosperity and luck. Red Petits Gateux in the shape of a traditional Chinese New Year lantern, a jasmine mousse filled with a honey panna centre, with caramelised mandarins and sesame brittle for luck, fortune and fertility. As well as a bespoke window display created by the Harvey Nichols visual display team exclusively at Yauatcha until the 10th February. They created a large red origami-style Perspex horse jumping into the front window, with a flowing mane and tail made of 1,000 red folded envelopes, hand made by luxury paper merchant GFSmith. A lavishing display where fashion meets food, sadly, I missed their traditional Chinese dragon dance performance on Sunday.
