Strength through Vulnerability: My life with the F-word (Part 1)

My life is dominated by the F-word. That F-word is fear. by Patricia Grannum

They say there are only two fundamental emotions in the world: fear and love. All other emotions, happiness, anger, jealousy, for example, stem from one of them: fear or love. The emotion you align yourself with determines your trajectory in life. I wish I could say that I've been aligning myself with love but I have to say that my predominant emotion is fear and it has directed or affected my path in life and not in a good way..
This is not to say that I haven’t had joy in my life. I'm grateful for the good moments I've been able to experience. But I do have the feeling that things could be bigger. Bigger and better than I've allowed them to be. I've been holding back due to fear: fear of the unknown, fear of how I’ll be received if I go out on a limb, fear of falling, fear of failing.
But on the other hand, I want to have this big successful life with a big successful business with added happy relationship with a significant other. But I feel like my fear has me trapped in a box and all those things I want are on the other side
These are probably the most painful paragraphs I've ever had to write because they reveal a part of me that I normally keep hidden. But I think the best way to face your fears is to admit that they are there.
This is me admitting that they’re there. It’s my first attempt to get out of the box my fears have put me in.
I want to see what's on the other side.

(Strength Through Vulnerability is a series of posts where writers are challenged to be brutally honest about things that they normally keep hidden. The goal of the series is to encourage women to embrace their complexity and to live life with authenticity.
