Christmas in Germany

I am very late in updating you on my December exploits! As I’d mentioned before, I went to Germany for 2 weeks work-related training. It was so much fun! I love learning anything new about knitwear, so getting to work on the heaving-duty knitwear machinery was such an experience. We spent each weekday in training and in the evenings walked into the city centre of Reutlingen for their Christmas market. We even ventured down the world’s narrowest street.

Being there for two weeks meant that we had a weekend free in which to enjoy Christmastime in Germany. Trent joined me for the weekend, and Saturday we loaded up on our warm wooly items and went to Burg Hohenzollern (or Hohenzollern Castle). It was so picturesque! The castle’s usual events and sites were closed for Christmas; in place was a lovely marketplace. There were loads of stalls with fantastic handmade ornaments and jewellery and also delicious food! I had a lot of bratwurst and gluwein (mulled wine).

Sunday we went with the rest of our training group to Tubingen for the Chocolate Festival. The snow was light and fluffy, the town was strewn with Christmas decorations, and the bellies were filled with chocolate! …including one especially tasty chocolate liqueur from and edible cup.

I hope that if you haven’t already that someday you get to experience a German-styled Christmas market, even if not physically in Germany. Edinburgh has one each year, and it is so fun! I love getting all wooly-ed up and freezing your nose for that bit of Christmas cheer and a bit of tasty stollen!
