Five Tips for Amazing Engagement Photos

Over the Summer, Josh and I entered a contest via Instagram from two photographers we found in Baltimore Magazine, Andrea & Renata. While I do Youtube videos and take photos of myself a lot, I’ve never really been comfortable getting my photos taken by anyone else. I’m pretty stiff in front of the camera. I was excited to do my makeup and get dolled up for once! Aside from choosing a location, hair and makeup and the usual stuff, here’s what I learned throughout the day.

Choose awesome photographers
We won a contest from our amazing photographers, and they couldn’t have been a better fit for us! This was perfect, because our budget for the wedding is pretty pathetic. They were full of personality and energy, and they made us feel totally comfortable in front of the camera. While I am comfy taking photo/video of myself, having someone else do it for me is a whole other story.

Don’t experiment on the day of
I bought my dress for NYE, but when we decided to go for a more casual approach, I saved the dress for this. I already had Josh’s outfit picked out in my mind. What I should have done a few days before was to try on our outfits together. We got to the location and realized we probably shouldn’t have worn such similar colors (me in silver, him in gray). Luckily, he packed a blue shirt, which ended up working well for us.

Don’t have funky breath
Josh and I have never been so close before. We touched foreheads and noses for most of the shoot. He smelled my breath a lot, and I smelled his. At one point, he told me he could see my nose hairs. Luckily, it wasn’t a funky day.
Be comfortable
I wore four inch heels and a party dress from Kohl’s for our session. But everytime we went scouting for a new place to shoot, I threw on my Toms. If I didn’t, I would have been in agony. Also, if your makeup feels piled on and your hair is in a new style that you aren’t comfy in, it’s quite possible that will show in pictures.
Have Fun
You (hopefully) will only have one engagement shoot. Celebrate the fun/chaos leading up to the wedding! Even though it’s hard with an “audience” (photographers, the general public), you’ve gotta act like it’s just the two of you. Love each other, and it’ll show through the pictures.
