François Nars captures the daring spirit of Guy Bourdin in several exciting new gifting collections for department and specialty stores — his taste for controversy, the power of his explosive images, and his lasting influence on fashion photography as we know it today.
Audacious. Bold. Provocative.
Guy Bourdin is one of a mere handful of fashion photographers of the twentieth-century who radically and inventively shaped the genre.
Born in Paris in 1928, Bourdin began working for French Vogue in the mid-1950s. From the outset, his approach to fashion photography was ambitious and provocative, combining exquisite photographic style with complex narratives. His ability to create seductive images that introduced psychological tension into the scope of typically anodyne depictions of fashion was at its peak in Bourdin’s most successful decade of the 1970s.
The essence of Guy Bourdin’s glossy, glamorous editorials is captured in a sleek, stacked compact. Eyeshadows, Blushes, and a limited edition Larger Than Life® Lip Gloss are all sized for a glamorous departure. Featuring three iconic best-sellers and three new shades created exclusively for the NARS Guy Bourdin Holiday Collection.
The uninhibited look of a provocatively painted mouth was a signature of Guy Bourdin’s high-fashion images. François Nars evokes Bourdin’s sensual lip looks with this unique Lip Kit, a set of two signature sheer Lipstick shades and two mini Jumbo Lip Pencils, housed in a red lacquered, lipshaped collectible case.
Part art. Part fantasy. Pure fashion. The editorial legacy of Guy Bourdin is one of insatiable glamour and transfixing, sexually charged imagery. François Nars embraces the seductive spirit of Bourdin with this Mini Nail Polish Coffret, a collection of provocative Nail Polishes in four hyper saturated, limited edition shades.
Suspense. Surrealism. François Nars pays homage to the hypnotizing editorial world of Guy Bourdin in this Eyeliner Coffret, with fi ve uninhibited shades of Larger Than Life® Long-Wear Eyeliner in convenient travel sizes, enveloped in a sumptuous satin and patent heart-embellished pouch.
Featuring three best-sellers and two new shades created exclusively for the collection.
Bourdin has been characterized as an image-maker continually driven to depict macabre, frankly erotic storylines in his fashion photographs.
Although he layered difficult subtexts in his work, Bourdin was an unusually controlled image-maker, consciously weaving a multitude of themes and references into his photographs. A sophisticated appreciator of art and culture, Bourdin demonstrated how classical and contemporary imagery could be combined in the realm of fashion photography.
Bourdin’s influence has continued since his death in 1991, and a revival of his style and iconography has pervaded fashion photography throughout the past fifteen years. Art historical publications include Exhibit A (2001), Guy Bourdin (2003), 67 Polaroids (2004), A Message for You (2006) and In Between (2010).
