Travel files: Mamacoffee in Prague, Czech Republic

Hi everyone. This is Jack, popping in to share a little from my recent trip to Prague. As you guys know, I love a good cup of coffee and I am always on the hunt for a great Cup of Jo, especially when I am traveling. While I was in Prague, I discovered Mamacoffee which is a brand of coffee shops that specialize in locally roasted, fair-trade, organic coffees. Mamacoffee started as a local roaster selling coffee beans over the internet and has now grown into a multifaceted company with one goal in mind….share their love of coffee.

There are five mamacoffee locations in Prague but the one that really captured my attention was located at Vodikova 6. Not only is it expansive, with two stories and two separate bars, but they have somehow still created a space that is inviting and warm. In addition to espresso beverages, they also offer freshly brewed coffee and an assortment of baked goods and lunch items prepared in their own bakery that would be pretty hard to beat.

One of the things that I love about the current coffee culture is the focus on social responsibility. Mamacoffee is focused on the whole process of coffee from the farmer to the cafe. They have ongoing relationships with the farmers they purchase from and every year they send a team from the cafes to the plantations to spend time not only tasting and cupping but also to deepen the relationship with the farmer. This passion for every aspect of the process is obvious in their cafe and the way they do business.

They also serve all of their drinks in their signature mugs, which are available for purchase. Each one is hand painted locally, so they make a special gift to bring home, especially if your wife has been at home with three kids for a week.

Do you have a favorite coffee shop in Prague? What cafes or brands do you know that also have a deep love for coffee?

Some more fun facts about Mamacoffee:

  • Mamacoffee is all about their love for the coffee itself. When mamacoffee opened in 2008 they were the first cafe to serve locally roasted, certified fair-trade coffee in the Czech Republic and have played a key role in the development of the coffee culture in Prague.
  • In addition to their five mamacoffee locations they also offer two other brands Original Coffee and Cafe Jedna.
  • Original Coffee is focused on higher quality beans and different brewing methods with more of a purist approach to coffee with only the espresso bar and the various brewing methods.
  • The goal with this shop is to place coffee front and center and to create a space for the coffee “geek” to experience higher quality coffee in Prague.
  • Their newest brand Cafe Jedna is the most mainstream.
  • Mamacoffee has also started the Prague Coffee Festival, a huge weekend event that brings exposure and education to every aspect of the coffee producing process.
  • For those of us who secretly want to be baristas at home, Mamacoffee offers the Coffee Embassy, which educates on home brewing methods, flavor profiles and how to truly taste coffee.
