Bucket List :: Eat a Traditional Kougelhopf in Alsace

While we were in the Alsace region of France we heard rumors of a cake so delicious that we had to go on a little hunt for this mysterious Kougelhopf. While we may not be able to tell you just how to pronounce it, we can assure you that the hunt was not so laborious and was certainly worth every bit of the effort. A Kougelhopf, much like the brioche, is made with butter, milk, nuts, and dried fruit. It is baked in a traditional Kougelhopf pan which gives it a perfect dome and a twist then lightly dusted with power sugar and served as a breakfast treat. I like the way the French think, don’t you?

We found several bakeries in our gorgeous town of Riquewihr that offered this divine little treat warm for the early riser. If you have never had a Kougelhopf, we highly recommend adding it to your bucket list. Slice it and enjoy a bite of French baking with a warm cup of coffee and you will be on the right track to enjoying your day in the Alsace region.
