19 Awesome Ways to Use a Rubber Band

Nobody likes a one trick pony and we are here to tell you that rubber bands are not just for holding things together. The following is a list of 19 AWESOME ways to use a rubber band that you probably didn’t know (and will definitely want to try today).

  1. A Gripper: add a little extra traction to that stubborn jar of jam by wrapping a rubber band around the edge of the lid.
  2. A Glass Marker: gone are the days of drinking out of someone else’s glass at a party! Simply put a rubber band around the base of your drink and write your name on it. Want to reuse the bands for the next party? Use coloured bands instead.
  3. A Sliced Apple Keeper: This clever tip is from Wisebread.com, because of them you’ll never have to eat a brown piece of apple again! Once you slice up your apple for a work (or school) snack, put the pieces back together in apple shape and wrap a rubber band around the outside to hold them together. This will save you not only from using a plastic bag, but it will also save the fruit from oxidizing.
  4. Save Soap (or Shampoo): monitor how much soap is dispensed from the bottle by twisting a rubber band around the base of the pump.
  5. Kitchen Safety: prevent your cutting board from moving around during use by stretching a rubber band on either end. The rubber will grip to the counter keeping the board in place as you slice up the apples from number 3. ;)
  6. Temporary Leak Fixer: Use a wide rubber band to temporarily plug a leak (then call the plumber!)
  7. Remove A Stripped Screw: This one is from Bargain Babe, place a rubber band between the screw driver and the stripped screw head, press, and turn. Now you won’t need an extractor!
  8. Hanger Gripper: finally your dresses won’t slip off of the hangers while you are searching for something to wear in your closet (saving you valuable time in the morning)! Wrap one around each side of the hanger and the straps of your dress will stick to the rubber.
  9. Bookmark: no more dog-eared pages! Put a rubber band around the page where you left off and around the outside of the cover.
  10. Bed Slat Securer: wrap a rubber band around each end to cushion the slats on the bed frame and give them a little extra grip.
  11. Tie-dye Anything!: stretch rubber bands around T-shirts, Easter eggs, towels, etc. and dip them in coloured dye. This is a fun activity to do with kids outdoors. J
  12. A Hair tie: if you forgot a real hair tie at home just put your hair up using a rubber band. Be careful when you remove it, though, because sometimes it pulls hair out.
  13. An Extra Hand: This trick is from Good Housekeeping; loop the ends of a rubber band around the inside and outside doorknobs twisting to form an “X”, in the middle, across the latch. The tension from the rubber band will keep the door latch “open” transforming your entryway into a swing door so you can go in and out of your house with groceries or other things, hands-free.
  14. Shower Bottle Grip: wrap a few rubber bands around the middle of that slippery bottle of shower gel or shampoo to act as a grip.
  15. Bag Sealer: stop searching for chip bag clips and start using rubber bands! Just fold the open end of the bag over on itself a few times and place a rubber band around the center to keep your food fresh.
  16. Keep Things in A Folder: stretch a rubber band around the middle of a folder to keep your papers from spilling out (a binder clip also works, but that is another article).
  17. Tall Furniture Cleaner: MakingLifeEasier.com suggests spraying a sock with cleaner and then securing it around the end of a yardstick or broom pole with a rubber band to dust out-of-reach places.
  18. Car Visor Help: keep important papers within reach while driving by wrapping a rubber band on the end of the sun visor. Slip your parking pay stubs behind the rubber band; you will never have to frantically search for them again.
  19. For Fun: make a rubber band ball, launch bands across the room (at people or things), fashion a catapult, make bracelets. The fun is endless, as long as you can be imaginative! :)
