In less than 100 days Scotland will seal its fate. It will be a true vox populi, never before in Britain has a voter been imbued with such power. In the past we elected a government, on September 18th we will decide whether or not to dismantle a union that has lasted over 300 years. Darling, the aristos are worried. They know exactly where their backs will be come the revolution. As one Scottish blueblood told Tatler's August issue: "the buggers are out to get us!" One can alway rely on Britain's most discerning magazine to keep us informed of the ruminations of the landed gentry and currently they are viewing the SNP as a nervous pheasant would the cocking of a Purdey. I loved this month's article by the financially bouqueted journalist Sophia Money-Coutts who travelled the glens, moors and lochs to bring us a dispatch which had one worried Scottish peer declare: "England used to be our old enemy, now we really must stick together."
While the opinion polls suggest that the union is relatively safe and support for an independent Scotland hasn't yet reached the tipping point. Everyone will be holding their breath on September 18th.
