How To Get The Agnelli Lifestyle On A Budget.

Agnelli is a name that conjures up many things to many people, for some it reminds them of that lovable little rogue, the Fiat 500, for others it conjures up the roguishly debonair eligible bachelor, Lappo Elkann, the Fiat heir who is forever trailed by the sticky inexorable wisps of rumour and scandal but the now legendary name has always whisked me off on a magic carpet ride to the grand yet comfortable homes and gardens which Marella, Italian noblewoman and wife of Gianni, Italian industrialist and chairman of Fiat in its halcyon days, effortlessly created as the couple tred their stylish footprints across the globe and into history.
Rizzoli's new book, Marella Agnelli: The Last Swan, ( published October 14th) is already on my Christmas list.
"She was not a trophy wife, but a very cultivated woman with a real inner life who created some extraordinary homes"
What do you mean you haven't even started your letter to Santa? Blink and it will be December, get on it folks, those elves have heavy work loads. The title is of course a nod to Capote and his legion of aquiline nosed, elegant limbed style mavens.

Lucia van der Post at The FT, wrote the most wonderful article on the Agnellis last week, one of the the best parts was their 'How to Get the Look' section. I think we can all agree that "living well is the best revenge". So for anyone else who has the inclination to live the Agnelli lifestyle within their means, here's the SP on the sources of their more prosaic items.

Living The Dream
1.The only wine served at dinner: Brunello of Castello Romitorio ( around £35 a bottle, I have no idea how it differs from Brunello di Montalcino but have linked to Berry Bros - the gods of wine, even Dionysus has an account here)
2. Table linen from Houria Tazi in Morocco, ( placemats from around £70)
3. Stationary and notecards from F. Pettinaroli in Milan.
4. Candles came from Conterno, in Turin, founded in 1795, they don't have a website but mail order is available and their traditional tapered candles start at £10. (Tel: 3901 1562 2550)
5. Photoframes and all things wooden hailed from the 'poet of wood' Pierluigi Ghianda. (spoons from £100 - yes, I know, I'm pushing it with this, yet wouldn't mind one for my porridge, it would make me feel all mummy bear par excellence!)
So there you are, no excuses, now we can all live the dream.
