‘I want your hot love and emotion, endlessly.’
Drake has always been a purveyor of the kind of smooth and crisp R&B which defined the last decade, but it is not until now that he has fully-embraced this side of his musical persona. Hold On, We’re Going Home is a slick, 80s-styled slow jam backed by a propulsive beat and, thankfully, little trace of robo-laced autotune. The refreshingly organic production finds Drake’s silky vocals bathed in a layer of twilight synths which immediately evoke Dev Hynes’ masterful work on Solange’s recent EP True, also revealing something Drake has constantly been striving for in his work: soul. As a predominantly hip hop-based artist Drake has often found himself straddling the line between confessional lyricist and soulful crooner - he may not have completely mastered the latter, but with tracks as smooth as Hold On, We’re Going Home, Drake’s continued exploration of the R&B aesthetic is a welcome artistic journey.
