In Remembrance

This Tuesday, November 11th marks our Veterans Day in the United States, Armistice Day in France, and Remembrance Day in the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia. The day was originally set aside to remember the end of World War I but has come to recognize military veterans of all wars and conflicts.

One of the most stunning memorials to this day is the Tower of London Remembers which commemorates the the First World War. Artist and ceramist Paul Cummings and stage designer Tom Piper have filled in the moat of the Tower of London with 888,246 ceramic poppies. Each poppy represents a British military fatality during the war. I saw the beginning of this installation when I was in London this summer and thought it was impressive then but the finished display takes your breath away.

If England can do this to remember their veterans, the least we can do is wear a red poppy on Tuesday to remember ours.
