Language & Photography // My true loves
One of the reasons I have embraced photography is because it allows a connection with strangers that would be difficult, almost impossible, otherwise. I love learning from cultures that are different than my own.
Some of you already know that I have embarked on a new journey to learn Arabic. Where photography allows a connection without words, learning other people's mother tongue rather than expecting them to speak yours, is not only a deep form of respect for their culture and traditions, it is also a way to personally express your desire to connect with them as individuals.
I love practising other languages by speaking with and hearing from mother tongue speakers, I love meeting new people, especially people with different world views and experiences than me.
I love sharing what I see and learn around the world... Sometimes, I see and learn things about other cultures right in my own city.
These photos are from a wedding I was asked to photograph recently. Although everyone spoke English, parts of the ceremony were conducted in Arabic.
I was amazed by the fact that I could pick out a few words that I would have never understood only a few months before.
With love, Savage Travels
