SF Eats: Japanese in the Peninsula

Just south of the city, there's a nice concentration of mom and pop Japanese places ranging from general sushi to ramen / izakaya. And we're going to try them all! Ok, I'm kidding, but my husband and I do love our food exploration. Most recently, we went to try Ramen Izakaya Kagura based on reviews of their broth and then we went back to Usagi for some more comfort food.
Hakata Tonkotsu Ramen When eating ramen, my main focus is the broth. It must have depth and a richness imparted by the painstaking preparation process. If it doesn't, I feel like they took shortcuts. Of the ramen places in the area (including Ramen Dojo, Ramen Parlor, and Santa Ramen), this place has the most flavorful, creamy broth. They offer 2 types of noodles here - the thinner kind pictured above and a thicker version. I prefer the thicker version as it seems to soak up more broth.
Shiso Clams Ramen This was a special on their chalkboard featuring their thicker ramen noodle. Again, great flavor on the broth, but Tonkotsu was definitely the winner. The thicker noodle was fantastic though!
Back at Usagi:
Snow Crab Cucumber Salad Perfectly refreshing for a hot day and seasoned very well. I ordered this to share, but will definitely be getting one of my own next time.
Mushroom Omelet Rice Beneath the omelet is a tomato-ey chicken rice. I loved the combination of the creamy mushroom sauce with the tomato flavors.
Have a great week!
