A Silicone-Free Foundation Alternative That Is Bare Minerals’ BareSkin Pure Brightening Serum Foundation (Beautyholics Anonymous)

Bare Minerals is very popular brand for mineral makeup and even though I’ve tried my fair share of mineral makeup in my early years of beauty blogging, I’ve never actually tried the mineral foundation from Bare Minerals. When my interest in mineral makeup waned, I didn’t find the need nor desire to want to give Bare Minerals’ mineral foundation a go.

Recently, I received a newsletter from Kit Cosmetics announcing some of their new product launches and the one thing that caught my eye was the Bare Minerals BareSkin Pure Brightening Serum Foundation. This was the first time I had heard of a liquid foundation from Bare Minerals and when I found out that it was silicone-free, it made me really curious. I’ve never used silicone-free foundation before so this would be interesting to try out. I headed over to Kit Cosmetics the next day, got colour-matched and returned home with a bottle of the BareSkin foundation.

The BareSkin foundation is a liquid-to-powder foundation. You’ll have to shake the bottle hard before using it or else you’ll be squeezing water out of the bottle instead of foundation. It’s a very lightweight, liquid-y foundation that dries quickly to a matte finish. The amount of coverage on the skin depends on the amount of product you apply on the skin and more importantly, the amount of buffing you do with a brush. When I had my colour match done in store, the makeup artist gave my skin an almost full coverage but when I do it on my own, I tend to give myself only about a medium coverage. Boy, she must have gone to town with my skin!

This is a very interesting foundation because it doesn’t blend as easily as most of my silicone-packed foundations do when I do it with my fingers. When I do get the blending right with my fingers, it only gives light coverage whereas when I use my buffing brush, it gives a lot more coverage.

Bare Minerals recommend the use of the READY Precision Face Brush (AU$36.00) with this foundation. It’s an interesting brush with a dip in the middle as that’s where you squeeze out a few drops of foundation into before using it on your face. I decided not to purchase the brush because after playing with it in store, it’s very similar to my Shiseido foundation brush, only without a dip in the middle. Plus I thought it being only AU$2.00 cheaper than the actual foundation made the brush pretty expensive. If both products are needed to work with each other, it would make this set quite dear at a total of AU$74.00. I had no problems using the Shiseido foundation brush with it.

To be honest, I’m not a big fan of this foundation. When I buff it in with my brush, it makes the foundation look patchy on my skin. It doesn’t blend very well around my nose and forehead. In fact, when I applied the foundation, it emphasised the fine lines on my forehead and patchiness around my nose. It also made my T-zone look oily after a few hours even after setting the foundation with powder.

I’ve never used silicone-free liquid foundation prior to this so I don’t know if I’m doing anything wrong in terms of application. I still don’t think it has anything to do with the brush but maybe that’s just me being stingy on not wanting to buy a makeup brush I don’t need. This foundation is certainly not for me.

On the other hand, if you’re allergic to silicone, this is worth checking out, preferably if you get to try it out in store. Have the makeup artist try this out on you a few times before you plonk your money down on a bottle just to see how it looks on your skin. Even though it didn’t work for me, it may work for you after all.

What I like about it: A silicone-free alternative to liquid foundations.

What I do not like about it: Doesn’t blend very well on my face. Looks patchy on my skin.
