Roller Derby: Sign offs part two

So, you’ll probably have seen last week’s post about the first part of sign offs for level one of roller derby. This week was part two and I was in no way prepared for how stressful it was.

Last week I failed t-stops, plow stops and backwards stepping so on Friday I headed to Funky’s for a well-needed practice that focused on all those things. I got some great feedback and tips from two other skaters and was feeling a little more confident. I did, however, fall on my arse and have had a poor, sore tailbone ever since. The Ibruprofen/hot waterbottle combo is working a treat, though.

Monday arrived and we started with weaving. No problem there, I passed but could do with getting lower and going a bit faster. Next was lateral hops, this is where my confidence was shook. Instead of skating around the track and hopping, we had two lines and we had to hop from one side of the other. I’ve never had to worry about distance and couldn’t get the technique right. Luckily I passed, I’m not sure how…

Then we did glides and stops. No problem with glides. Stops, though, are my nemesis. I was just about getting the hang of t-stops last week but I failed them, I got some feedback on Friday and felt like I had them down. Plow stops were better this time around, I actually came to a stop once or twice. I’ve got the technique now, I think I just need to practice.

I, along with two others, were taken to the side to do stepping. I can do sideways but was told I needed to work on my forwards and backwards (despite passing forwards last week). I explained that around the track I could step every which way and that it was only under pressure that I would roll.

I was given one more go. I passed. Thank frell! I was so close to tears at this point.

We ran out of time so we didn’t get to do the balance or crossovers.

I woke up this morning to my sign off record having been updated. The only thing I failed was plow stops! I can’t tell you how pleased I am. Next week I should have the chance to try again so I’m going to get lots of practice in over the next week.

Fingers crossed for level two!

(Also, I’m feeling major love for my derby family.)
