Get the warrior look – Katniss Everdeen style

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay is here! Not only can lead character Katniss Everdeen hold her own against 11 other tributes but she does so with effortless style. Her signature hairstyle throughout these films is the Dutch braid and it’s so easy to replicate at home.

The Dutch braid is similar to the French braid except that it is reversed. So, if you are already an expert with this hairstyle, you will find this simple. However, I have broken down this technique into 5 easy to follow steps so you’ll be braiding like a pro and looking like Katniss in no time.

1) First of all you need to prep your hair. This type of braid can be done using either damp or dry hair but you need to make sure that your locks are well brushed to remove any tangles.

2) Begin your braid by taking a section of hair an inch above your ear from either the left or right hand side of your head. This section needs to be around 1-2 inches thick which is then separated into three smaller pieces for the base of the braid.

3) Start braiding these sections of hair by bringing each piece underneath the middle section instead of over. After two cross overs, add in segments of loose hair again, around an inch thick underneath the centre piece along with the piece you just braided.

4) Repeat this process and add in sections of loose hair, continuing the braid around the base of your neck until you reach the other side of your head and all of your hair is within the braid.

5) Once all of the hair is within the braid, continue in a regular three-strand braid and secure with a hair bobble.

Styling Tips:

  • To achieve that true Katniss Everdeen style, stretch your braid by gently pulling on it to transform your look. This works best with fine hair as it gives a fuller and more voluminous look.
  • This braid works best with long hair or people with long layers. Shorter hair or hair with layers will fall out easier so you will need help securing with kirby grips and hairspray.
  • To get the best effects, use hair that hasn’t been washed for 24 hours as this will help keep the braid in place.
