If you follow me on Twitter you already know that I’m obsessed with the FX show “Sons of Anarchy.” So much so that I’ve watched five seasons in, oh, about two and a half weeks. The show focuses on the Sons, a California-based motorcycle club. But for me, the most fascinating part is the wives and girlfriends of club members, who slowly become collateral damage of the club’s doings. I can’t lie, this show isn’t a happy one. In fact, I can count the moments of happiness on one hand. There’s lots of violence, death and drama but for some reason I can’t stop watching. It’s absolutely bewitching.

In both fashion and attitude, the women of “Sons of Anarchy” evolve to emulate their motorcycle-riding partners. This is one of the few shows on television where the women are styled to appear masculine and feminine at the same time. Their clothes are armor against the harsh and cruel world they inhabit. There’s nothing frilly or girly about what they wear because these women are neither one of those things. The women are strong, bold and persevering in face of adversity. Yet, despite all this, their lives of chaos are very much a choice. They could leave and start over yet choose not to do so. It’s a very interesting case of why people stay in situations they know are bad for them and how much love and a lifestyle can have a hold on someone. Yes, their clothing is their armor.
