I’ve been on a serious oldies kick lately. My Lesley Gore greatest hits album has a renewed place in my heart. Back in the day when I was still dancing around the living room in my childhood home, I took her music completely at face value. Lines like “Deep down inside he loves me though he may run around” and “He loves me and I know it but he’s just afraid to show it. That’s the way boys are” meant exactly what they said. Now that I’ve re-discovered her music, I realize how incredibly satirical it all is, and I’m seriously digging it. The song of the week is “You Don’t Own Me” which, while not satirical, was a pretty bold tune for ’64. (There’s no actual video for this so just press play and look away.)
“
Nicki and Beyoné’s Wake Up Call”
Discussing the Nicki Minaj and Beyoncé remix of “Flawless”. Worth a read.
“Before she hands over the song to Minaj, she drops to a soft voice and summarizes ‘Flawless,’ and her position in the world: ‘I’m the shit, I’m the shit, I’m the shit. I want everyone to feel like this, tonight.’ She is our universal pop ego, and we grow with her self-celebration every time she hands it back to us. “
Another song. A good song. And a good video.
