Ebony’s Fashion Picks: Preppy Traditional Classic Style (GirlsBestFriendandCoBlog)

I tend to stick to preppy, traditional, classic style. I have an affinity for all-American fashion. For me, style is all about going for pieces that have stood the test of time and are universally flattering and useful for multiple occasions. My style philosophy is “Keep it simple, sweetie.” Granted, such a style philosophy could land me in a rut, so I try to mix things up by adding a pop of color or an interesting pattern here and there. Nonetheless, I strive to maintain a look that is clean, chic and appropriate for any occasion. Below, here’s a list of the top ten pieces that I always have in my closet. The Little Black Dress: This has gotten me through many a cocktail party and semi-formal affair. I couldn’t live without it.

The White Button-Down Shirt: This is a piece that seamlessly transitions from work to weekend. Short-or long-sleeved, every woman should have one.

The Trouser Jean: For me, the trouser jean is the ultimate fit. It skims or creates curves and the cut adds a sense of formality. Go for a dark wash for ultimate wearability.

The Pencil Skirt: This is a piece that can be very business-like or quite sexy. It’s all a matter of how you dress it up. Black and neutral pencil skirts are the front-runners, but colored and printed ones are starting to become more visible these days.

The Blazer: In black, navy or a funky color, blazers add structure to any outfit and are a fabulous way to keep warm in air-conditioned rooms.

The Cardigan: These are yet another perfect option for chilly rooms and for adding color to an otherwise neutral outfit. Snatch several of these up in your favorite hues.

The Silk Blouse: I also have several of these in jewel tones and patterns to don under my blazers or with my black pencil skirt to add softness and interest.

The Black Trouser: For events that call for a little more formality and when the idea of wearing a skirt or dress isn’t grabbing me, my black trousers come in handy.

The Black Patent Pump: I’m not one for sky-high stilettos, but I still want some height now and again. Personally, I prefer those with a platform in the sole for balance and comfort.

The Ballet Flat: On my casual days, ballet flats take me very far. Owning a black pair is a given, but a pop of color or a fun print never hurt anyone.
