Around the House

I'm not gonna do a 10 on Tuesday post this week since I'm a little tired of all the lists I've been making. I'm all listed out. Bleh! Instead I'll just focus on one topic for this post. It's been almost one year since we've moved into our new home. Time sure does fly! I was really overwhelmed by our new home. It was a blank slate for us. Of course we had our existing furniture, but we had little decor. We also had the entire backyard to conquer as it was completely unlandscaped.

Before last winter, I sat down and came up with an overall general layout of what I wanted to do with our backyard. It wasn't going to be easy and it wasn't going to be cheap. Sure, we could've hired a professional to do everything for us, but then we wouldn't get to learn to do things for ourselves. Now we know how to put together a sprinkler system, build a shed, put together some good soil for gardening, and so much about the ins and outs of our home.

I can't help but admire my hard work - it was hideous before! One of our veggie boxes - tomatoes, garlic, and basil.
Although for our next house, we'll probably hire professionals since they have all the tools necessary. Plus it's such back breaking work!

This past weekend was bright and sunny. I was very inspired to get down and dirty.

Planted lavender by our master bedroom windows
Cleared some weeds and put down mulch
Re-potted the dwarf tangerine tree
Fertilized rose bushes and fruit trees
Cleared weeds in vegetable garden area
Planted basil and tomato plants

This took me about 3 hours to do! But I'm really proud of myself and I can admire that area by our windows now. I chose to plant lavender because they smell nice and they repel certain bugs. I'm really excited for our tomatoes this year. I also started some seedlings for oregano, squash, and watermelon. Not sure if I'll plant anything else. Maybe zucchini?

For next weekend here's what I'm planning to do:

- Get rid of weeds by gazebo
- Moar mulch, mulch, mulch
- Hang citronelle in gazebo
- Lighting fixtures around gazebo
- Fertilize vegetable garden

The mulch will probably take up the whole weekend since we need to apply mulch every where. My main project is to clean up the gazebo area so we can go out and enjoy it. Also, hubs was complaining there isn't enough light over there for him to grill.

A few weekends ago we purchased a wine rack from IKEA. It's pretty cheap, $10. I'm thinking of painting it but I haven't decided what color(s) yet. I'd also like to fill it with more wine. Any suggestions?

I put up this cute bunny picture I got from IKEA as well. We still have quite a few bare walls in our house. While I don't want to overwhelm every inch of space with pictures, I would like to put up more art. I've been taking my sweet time on this because I want to get it right. I want to put up stuff that I can enjoy year round.

After we finish the backyard and wall decor, I'll be focusing all my energy towards organizing. I've already organized some parts of the house, but things could definitely be more organized. I'd also like to have time to sift through things to see what we can get rid of.
