note to self: letting life get in the way

he’s a crazy mutt

this past weekend my husband and i got away. we drove up the coast to mendocino through the vineyards, then the redwoods, until we hit the coastline. we took our dog to the beach. my mind had to shift from the fact that a wet dog was going to get in the back of my new car. we got sand in our beers and drank out of cardboard coffee cups from a local deli while sitting on the beach, watching the happiest mutt frolick in the salt water. i read a magazine, pat took a nap. we drank a champagne. we went on a date, we took our dog for a walk through a pretty garden, we saw our dog freak out at the sight of a donkey at the edge of that pretty garden (it was pretty funny – sorry rhody!).

my phone battery died, i didn’t have service for most of the trip, and everything was ok. my amazing clients knew i would be out of service and it was still ok. i checked off my to-do list before i checked out for the weekend, and held true to my promise that i would truly be checked out.

many times i tell my clients i’ll be out of the office on vacation but i still check in on a daily basis. most of them know me for this as they tell me “it’s ok, go enjoy!” and for our 1-day getaway, i did. it’s amazing what a little escape can do for the soul. it teaches us that things really will be ok. that we need to let go once in a while, that we need to spend time with our loved ones without an iphone at arm’s reach.

these past years of owning a business have taught me so much. as a business owner you learn that your friends will never truly understand what it’s like to always be “on”. that your family is #1, always, and you need to make hard decisions sometimes to keep it that way. that your clients sometimes share that #1 slot and it’s all about balance. that setting priorities and boundaries are the key to success and putting the blinders on to what “everyone else is doing” is the key to sanity. this past weekend i let life get in the way, and it was the best weekend ever because i enjoyed every single moment, but also because i came back in to the office today on my “monday off” ready and excited to tackle this week’s list. there will never, ever be a case of the mondays for this gal as long as i continue to make my job what i dream it to be.

and with that, i’m off to prep for the last 5 weddings of the year. i can’t believe we’re in september already – such an exciting month for so many clients, i cannot wait to get going!

have a great week, everyone! i hope you have a chance to let life get in the way, too. :)
