4 Ways to Transition Your Beauty Routine for Fall

Give your skin some TLC

When it starts to get cold the skin can dry out and become irritated from the sudden change in elements. Calm the skin down by using a combination of calming and nourishing products on the face to create a supple and healthy canvas for your face makeup that nourishes your skin at the same time. Begin by spritzing Jurlique Calendula Redness Rescue Calming Mist ($38) all over the face. The soothing properties of the calendula flower combined with the moisturizing properties of the aloe and linseed extracts protect the skin from environmental stressors.

Then press in a few drops of some well-needed antioxidants found in the sage leaf extract of Eminence Organics Facial Recovery Oil ($76). The bonus of this luxurious oil: the clary sage oil helps balance oil production, while the entire formula is made using certified biodynamic practices—unleash your inner tree hugger ladies! Finally finish off with a pea sized dot of the new Dermalogica Redness Reducing Primer ($62) to create a smooth like silk finish all over the face, the perfect canvas for layering your other products. Unlike other primers that prevent the skin from breathing the silicone base protects your skin’s moisture barrier so you don’t dry out, the green tint camouflages redness and the SPF of 20 fights off UVA and UVB rays.

Face makeup match-up

Lets’s face it two foundation colours for the entire year doesn’t cut it anymore especially since the first couple of months after summer is over your skin tone changes from golden to yellow, to straight out pale! Instead of constantly investing into new foundation shades always keep two main foundation shades on hand (one for summer, one for winter) and try mixing a liquid bronzer in for those in-between periods. The result: Your face makeup will look more natural, less packed on and overall you’ll radiate a contagious glow that everyone around you will ask about.

Our favourite product to achieve this simple trick is Perricone MD No Bronzer Bronzer ($45). The convenient liquid formula lets you customize the amount of pigment you need, just add more drops if you need to deepen more! Plus the SPF 30 protects and the Vitamin C helps alleviate sunspots and damage. If you want to add a bit of radiance to your skin, try out the Giorgio Armani Maestro Liquid Summer ($64) instead. This tip goes for transitioning from Winter into Spring too!

Subtle dark lips

The quintessential dark moody lip is definitely an autumn favourite, but when it’s still warm outside in the afternoon wearing a rich, vampy lip often feels a bit bizarre. Instead of going full throttle into the opaque blackberry and plum ranges, ease into them by trying a lip-stained look instead. This look appears as if you’ve just drank a glass of wine that has left behind it’s imprint, creating a more natural feel that makes the change from your hot pink summer lips seem less drastic.

We’re smitten with Revlon ColorStay Moisture Stain ($14) in Parisian Passion—the staining pigments in the formula means your lip will pack the same amount of pigment hours later. Simply apply a generous dab in the centre of the lip and move it around all over by smacking your lips together creating a grape juice look stain all over. If you are willing to treat yourself a bit more splurge on the new Chanel Rouge Allure Gloss ($40) in Seduction, a daring bright berry hue. For a stained glass look first apply a lip balm underneath followed by a coat of this ultra shiny and nourishing gloss. Our other favorite berries of the season include the Yves Saint Laurent Gloss Volupté ($35) in Cuir Grenat, a shimmering deep raspberry and the upcoming NARS Lip Gloss in Corsica ($31, available in November), for a softer berry look.

Brighten up those eyes

As fall hits, the days shorten meaning our sleep cycles get disturbed often bringing to fruition those pesky dark circles around our eyes and puffy under eye bags. Keep your eyes looking bright and beautiful with the help of a camouflaging BB Cream for your eyes.

Our favourite budget friendly pick to achieve this look is Garnier’s BB Eye Miracle Skin Perfector ($11), which combines dark circle blasting haloxyl and mineral pigments that even the skin tone. Finish off by adding a bit of illumination by adding highlights of neutral shimmery eyeshadows on the inner corners of your eyes and along the waterline. For budget friendly shadows, try the CoverGirl Flamed Out Shadow Pot ($5) in Blazing White 350 if you’re fair skinned or Melted Gold if you have a deeper skin tone. If you are willing to invest a bit more we love the Dior 3 Couleur Smoky Eyes Palette ($50) in Smoky Nude that features both a neutral champagne shadow and a copper shimmer shadow.
