CFW 2014: Afrocentric Bohemia from British Designer Alicia Mullings

.

One of our favourite collections from CFW weekend came from British designer Alicia Mullings who’s afrocentric mens and womenswear utilized imagery of the Jamaican intellectual Marcus Garvey, Ethiopian queens and black superhero personas. The collection’s theme was creatively orchestrated using two-piece dress sets in midi-lengths, wide-mouthed pants and skirts with brimmed hats, men’s tunics and matching bomber jackets and short sets. Upon closer observation of the collection in the CFW boutique, the designs left us wanting more from their construction with some sewing lines missing their cue. Despite the slight blemish in tailoring, Mulling’s mix of streetwear and bohemia was well articulated and contained continuity in style. We left the event that night “day-dreaming” about one particular Marcus Garvey bomber jacket being introduced to our closet and the many funky ways we’d dress it up and down.
